Question

I am a 27-year-old lady in Nigeria, presently earning about N180,000 per month. This is obviously not good enough. How do I become financially free?

Answer

First things first, please do not beat yourself up because of the amount you’re currently earning. Instead, let’s look at practical ways you could earn more and become more financially free. The key is to be like a chameleon, adapt and evolve.

So, let’s talk about skills. Do you have any hidden talents that you haven’t monetised yet? Writing fire copy? Designing websites that slay? Coding like a tech goddess? Invest in yourself, take online courses, attend workshops—knowledge is power, especially when it comes to negotiating a raise or even negotiating your pay on a freelance gig. Speaking of which, don’t be shy about that raise review! Do your research, know your worth, and confidence is your best accessory.

But income is not everything, right? You have to be smart about how you spend too. Track your expenses! Know where your money is going before it does a disappearing act. Budget! Cut back on unnecessary orders and impulse buys, and watch your finances get better and better the more you practice this. And debt? Honey, that’s the kryptonite to financial freedom. Tackle it head-on, negotiate lower interest rates, and do whatever it takes to get out of its clutches. Freedom tastes sweeter when you’re not chained to bills. Find ways to make paying bills easier on yourself. For example, your rent is not a surprise, you know how much you’re meant to pay every year. You can divide that amount into 12 and then each month, save towards the amount you get after the division. It is easier this way.

Most importantly, remember that financial freedom is a journey, not a destination. It’s about making smart choices, learning from every stumble, and celebrating every victory, big or small. Surround yourself with other ambitious people, build a support system that cheers you on and keeps you inspired. You have this in the bag! Lagos might be a wild ride, but you’re built for it!
